One of the most captivating towns of Salento, Castro gives you the impression of a snow-white town (especially looking up from the sea). It consists of two parts, upper part (where the historic centre is) and Castro Marina (down near the sea). Historically it was one of the first cities in Salento to be elevated to the rank of county, it was also a bishopric seat till 1818 thanks to Leone II.
Castro Marina
Most important monuments are the Aragonese Castle (the castle of Castro, was built in the thirteenth century on the ruins of a Byzantine building, in 1480, and as it happened with Otranto, the city was invaded by the Turks and the castle was partly destroyed), the Cathedral of Castro (Chiesa dell’Annunziata with Latin cross, it was built in 1171, probably on the ruins of a Greek temple), the Sanctuary dedicated to Madonna of Pompeii and Messapic Walls (the wall that encloses the center of Castro and develops a perimeter of about 700 meters and is reinforced by the mighty castle and some towers, the maintenance of the walls was managed by the feudal lord until 1806, till feudalism was abolished), the Statue of Minerva and the reconstruction of tympanum of the Doric temple dedicated to the Goddess.

While in the lower part of the town there is the park of oak trees ‘il parco delle querce’ or ‘il parco dello Scarra’ (wood area of 3 hectares, very interesting from a scientific point of view, as it is rich in specific plant species, which are now rare in Salento).

Castro Marina is also highly attended in the evening. The embankment and the Adriatic coastline that leads from Castro to Santa Cesarea Terme become alive and offer many possibilities for nightlife (for example Blubay disco).
Castro Marina is famous for its picturesque small old port, the bustling waterfront with spectacular rocky coast. In this area there are the most fascinating seabeds of Salento, rich in flora and fauna in crystal clear water the color of which varies from cobalt blue to emerald green depending on the point of observation. One can rent a boat, pedalo and canoe in the small port.
grotta Zinzulusa
Castro was awarded the Blue Flag in the following years: 1994, 2000, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013.
The most famous sea caves near Castro Marina are grotta Zinzulusa and grotta Romanelli, which attract those who love diving.
